Ellen DeGeneres is set to judge on American Idol 2010, but wasn’t there Tuesday, January 12th for the season premiere. The first episode of American Idol for Ellen DeGeneres will actually be during Hollywood week of the 2010 season. This was announced on the Tuesday, January 12th episode of The Ellen DeGeneres Show, as she noted that she was hired on to American Idol after the audition phase had ended. Now fans will be able to watch her take the first swing at being an Idol judge when the contestants all head to California for Hollywood week.
The 2010 American Idol Judges
Ellen DeGeneres is joining American Idol this year due to an opening at the judges table. Former judge Paula Abdul and the American Idol producers were unable to come to terms on a new contract for her to return to the show, and that caused Abdul to simply walk away from Idol. The other three judges, who are Simon Cowell, Randy Jackson, and Kara DioGuardi will all be returning for another season of the show for yet another season.
2010 American Idol Season Premiere
During the auditions for this season of American Idol, the show also brought in celebrity guest judges to fill the open slot Singer and model Victoria Beckham took the seat during the premiere. There will be two audition episodes each week until the beginning of February 2010, when the Winter Olympics takes over all of television.
American Idol Season Nine Celebrity Judges
One of the quirks for the season nine auditions, is that Idol had an open seat at the judges table. They decided to fill that seat with a guest judge at each stop on their audition tour. Victoria Beckham starred in the season premiere, and will be followed by Mary J. Blidge, Kristin Chenoweth, Joe Jonas, Neil Patrick Harris, Avril Lavigne, Katy Perry, and then Shania Twain before the show heads on over to Hollywood Week.
American Idol Hollywood Week
Every season the singers that make it past the audition phase of American Idol are sent on to Hollywood, where they go through another round of singing in front of the judges. At this point, the judges also decide which 24 or 36 singers will be moving forward and it also marks the last night that the judges typically have full control. From there the contestants are sent on to the live shows where the singers perform and are then voted on by the home audience.
Ellen DeGeneres Joins American Idol
On AI's Hollywood week, Ellen DeGeneres joins the judges table. She will bring her own flavor to the judging table, and it will be an interesting dichotomy between herself and Simon Cowell, who is often referred to as the toughest judge of the group.
